It’s your senior year and you deserve the absolute best for your senior photos. You’ve worked too hard for this moment in your life to leave it up to just anyone. Hopefully you have been considering hiring a professional photographer, if you’re tempted otherwise check out my blog on why you that would be a bad idea. Whether I am the right photographer for you or not, I am here to help you know what exactly to look for so that you can know how to find the right senior photographer for you and book your dream senior photo session.
Here are 7 tips to help you find the right senior photographer for you:
High Quality Images
Professional photographers invest in top level equipment to make sure that they can produce high quality images that can be printed in large format products (like canvases and wall prints) and stand the test of time. An iPhone or even some entry level cameras just won’t be able to produce that same type of quality.
Editing Style
One main factor to consider is how the images have been edited. Every photographer has their own editing style. So, you have to decide which style catches your eye more. Notice the skin tone… do the seniors in the galleries have pores, freckles and natural skin tone? How about the lighting? Is the subject in the images bright and colorful? Or is there a moody feel with shadows? Does it look like a clean edit or does it look like an Instagram filter. These are important things to observe because what you see in their portfolio will most likely be how your very own senior images appear.
Website
Make sure they are on the web with a professional website. Don’t just stop at the home page! Dive in to their about page, session experience page, frequently asked questions, etc. These web pages should give you a ton of details on who they are as a photographer and the session experience they provide.
The Experience
Some photographers offer an entire experience from pre-session planning consults, longer sessions and ordering sessions. While others offer a quick session and digital images sent online. These are two very different senior photo processes that will allow you to choose which one is best for you depending on your wants and needs.
Portfolio
While you’re on the photographer’s website, browse their images on their portfolio page. Notice their use of lighting, colors, shadows, posing, etc. This will really give you an idea of what your own session images would look like if you hired them. Also, check for consistency. Are some images in focus and some blurry? Are some edited differently than others? Lastly, check for variety. A gallery should have a variety in posing, locations, angles, facial expressions and so much more. You want to hire a photographer who can give you consistently beautiful images with variety throughout your gallery.
Price Point
Just like clothing stores, photographers range from Louis Vuitton prices to garage sale prices. Neither option is wrong or better than the other. You will just want to focus on what is included in the prices given to you. Some clients want beautiful wall art to hang in their homes or to display at grad parties. Some are only interested in digital images. When viewing their pricing menu , take note in what YOU want and what the PHOTOGRAPHER offers. There are some photographers like myself, who specialize in specific products like albums, luxury wall art collections and other products that you can choose from.
Reviews
The photographer you hire for your senior session should have several testimonials. These can be found on their website, social media or on their google business profile. If they don’t have any published, it’s ok to ask them for references so that you can be sure.
